Is asthma hereditary?
Explore the genetic variants associated with asthma, airway inflammation and allergic rhinitis — traits where inheritance and environment interact.
Asthma is long-term inflammation of the airways that causes episodes of wheezing and breathlessness. Family studies show asthma often runs in families, and large genome-wide studies have linked many loci to asthma and related allergic conditions.
What the analysis shows
DNAHelper shows which asthma-related variants your raw file contains and what research has linked them to. The result is a statistical association — not a diagnosis of asthma, which can only be made with spirometry and clinical assessment. The analysis is based on the traits asthma, adult onset asthma, childhood onset asthma, allergic rhinitis (1355 associated variants, strong evidence strength).
Which variants matter
Asthma is polygenic — studies have identified many loci, several in genes that control immune defence and the barrier function of mucous membranes, including the IL33 and TSLP regions. Each variant only slightly raises or lowers the statistical risk.
Research often distinguishes between childhood-onset and adult-onset asthma — they share some loci but differ in others, and childhood asthma is more strongly linked to atopy (sensitivity to common allergens).
What research has actually found
Twin studies estimate the heritability of asthma at roughly 50–70 percent. Having a parent or sibling with asthma or allergic rhinitis clearly raises your own risk — but far from everyone with a hereditary predisposition develops the condition.
Many of the loci overlap with allergic rhinitis, eczema and atopy — one reason these conditions often co-occur in the same person or family. Genetics cannot say who will actually develop symptoms.
What matters more than your genes
Environmental triggers weigh heavily: smoke exposure, air pollution, mould and household allergens, plus airway infections early in life. Smoking during pregnancy and around children is one of the strongest known environmental factors.
If you suspect asthma — recurring wheezing, night-time coughing or breathlessness on exertion — seeing a doctor is the way forward. Spirometry and clinical assessment determine the diagnosis, not genetic variants.
Limitations — read this before interpreting the result
This is educational information about statistical associations — not a medical statement, not a health test and not a statement about your health. The analysis is based on the traits asthma, adult onset asthma, childhood onset asthma, allergic rhinitis (strong evidence strength). If you suspect symptoms, contact healthcare — a predisposition is not a diagnosis.
Privacy: your file never leaves the browser
You pick your raw file locally — it is parsed and analysed entirely in your browser and is not uploaded for the standard analysis. The only exception is the optional DNA Chat feature where you, after explicit consent, can share selected variants. Read the privacy policy · What happens to your DNA file?
Compatible raw files
Works with raw data exports from MyHeritage, 23andMe, AncestryDNA and FamilyTreeDNA (.txt, .csv, .zip). The download guides show exactly where to find the file at your provider — and the file formats are explained here.
