Is psoriasis hereditary?

Explore the genetic variants associated with psoriasis.

Psoriasis is an immune-related skin disease that often runs in families. The strongest genetic link lies in the HLA region — the same area that governs the immune system's recognition of the body's own tissue.

What the analysis shows

DNAHelper shows which psoriasis-associated variants your raw file contains. The result is a statistical association — not a statement about your skin. The analysis is based on the traits psoriasis vulgaris, psoriasis (69 associated variants, strong evidence strength).

Which variants matter

The HLA-C region — particularly the HLA-C*06:02 variant — is the most established risk marker for psoriasis vulgaris. Beyond it there are dozens of loci in genes regulating the immune system and the skin barrier.

Psoriasis shares parts of its genetic landscape with other immune-related conditions — the same variants can be linked to several autoimmune phenotypes.

What research has actually found

The link to HLA-C*06:02 is replicated in large studies across decades — it is one of the strongest associations for a common autoimmune disease.

But even the strongest variant only raises the probability: most carriers never develop psoriasis, and many without the variant do.

What matters more than genes

Triggers — skin injuries, stress, infections, smoking, certain medications — determine if and when the disease breaks out in a carrier. Onset in early adulthood is the classic pattern.

Genetic information does not change care: a rash matching psoriasis belongs in healthcare, regardless of what the predisposition says.

Limitations — read this before interpreting the result

This is educational information about statistical associations — not a medical statement, not a health test and not a statement about your health. The analysis is based on the traits psoriasis vulgaris, psoriasis (strong evidence strength). If you suspect symptoms, contact healthcare — a predisposition is not a diagnosis.

Privacy: your file never leaves the browser

You pick your raw file locally — it is parsed and analysed entirely in your browser and is not uploaded for the standard analysis. The only exception is the optional DNA Chat feature where you, after explicit consent, can share selected variants. Read the privacy policy · What happens to your DNA file?

Compatible raw files

Works with raw data exports from MyHeritage, 23andMe, AncestryDNA and FamilyTreeDNA (.txt, .csv, .zip). The download guides show exactly where to find the file at your provider — and the file formats are explained here.
