Analyze your FamilyTreeDNA data in DNAHelper
If you have taken the Family Finder test at FamilyTreeDNA, you can download your autosomal raw data and analyze it in DNAHelper — no new test needed.
1. Download the raw data from FamilyTreeDNA
Important first: FamilyTreeDNA requires two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled on the account before raw data can be downloaded.
- Sign in at familytreedna.com with your kit.
- Go via the navigation menu: Results & Tools → Autosomal DNA → Download Raw Data. (Alternatively: on your dashboard, the Autosomal DNA Results & Tools widget → See More → Data Download.)
- Download the Build 37 Concatenated Raw Data file — it contains all autosomal markers plus the X chromosome.
2. The file you get — important about .gz
The raw data is a CSV file compressed as .gz (gzip), e.g. _concatenated_build37_raw_data.csv.gz. The file check and the app both read .gz in modern browsers — or unzip it first: on Mac a double-click usually works, on Windows a tool like 7-Zip. The unpacked .csv file is ready to use.
3. Analyze the file in DNAHelper
Open app.dnahelper.com and pick the file. The entire analysis — parsing, scoring and display — runs locally in your browser. Your raw data file is never uploaded.
4. Your 24-hour trial
The trial starts automatically when the analysis completes — not when you open the page. You get full access for 24 hours with no registration, email or card. A local summary stays on your device afterwards.
Good to know about FamilyTreeDNA
- Without 2FA enabled, raw data and match lists cannot be downloaded.
- Y-DNA and mtDNA raw data are separate files — for DNAHelper the autosomal (Build 37) file is the relevant one.
- If you transferred your data to FamilyTreeDNA from another provider, "transfer" data cannot be downloaded — use the original file from your original provider instead.
Limitations
DNAHelper shows genetic traits and research associations for education — not medical diagnoses or advice. What you see depends on which markers your FamilyTreeDNA file contains.
